My last post on this blog was about hard relines and how to process them and how to give them additional strength.
This post will be about an alternative for denture relines that are not meant for strengthening the older denture but that can be used for the comfort of the denture wearing patient. One of them being with another Keystone Industries product call Versacryl Thermo-Elastic Denture material.
Versacryl Thermo-Soft Adjustable Denture Liner is unique in that it is not a regular “soft reline” material. It is a heat sensitive liner that softens at body temperature to an extremely comfortable cushiony effect that yields to pressure and actually creates better suction. Versacryl acts like a shock absorber under masticatory pressure but its slow recovery prevents the bounce back effect that pushes the denture away from the residual ridge that many of the other popular soft liners exhibit. (Can be processed chairside or in lab)
At body temperature the Versacryl Thermo-Soft lined dentures are designed to adjust themselves in the mouth to the contours of the gum. If discomfort or tissue changes occur the liner can be re-adjustable by immersing and soaking the denture in a bowl of hot water for 2 minutes at 175F (±) 5, then quickly dry off all the excess water on the denture and insert in the patients mouth. (Versacryl is an insulator and will not transfer heat to tissue but water will and the denture should be wiped thoroughly dry.) Slowly find the correct bite, then clench hard for 2 seconds. Do not warm to remove the denture. The Versacyl will have adapted itself to the patient’s tissue changes. This procedure can be repeated as often as necessary until the desired comfort level is reached.
The Versacryl Surface Sealer should be applied for the initial processing and reapplied after each adjustment and re-adjustment. This will allow the Versacryl Thermo-Soft Denture liner to exceed the suggested lifetime of five to six years for a denture.
Versacryl Chairside Reline Technique for the Versacryl Self Cure Reline Kit
Self cure method
To add a reline at chairside:
1. trim at least 2mm off the denture
2. roughen and prime well with monomer, preferably twice
3. mix Versacryl following enclosed directions
4. quickly apply a thin layer while still very liquid
5. build up evenly, seal the edges well and wait for Versacryl to gel
6. place in mouth, check bite and muscle mould
7. remove denture within 20 sec., cure in pressure cooker and finish.
DIRECTIONS:
Powder liquid ratio: between 1,5 to 2 parts powder : 1 part liquid, by weight. Determine whether the reline may be considered small, medium or large.
Using the measuring cups, dispense:
Small reline 5ml liquid = 3 grams to 7ml powder = 5 grams
Medium reline 7ml liquid = 4.5 grams to 10ml powder = 7 grams
Large reline 10ml liquid = 7 grams to 17ml powder = 11 grams
The Versacryl self cure reline Material is polymerized in a pressure vessel in lukewarm water at 20 to 25 psi for 15 minutes.
Apply the Versacryl Surface Sealer as recommended in instruction booklet.
The best of both worlds would be a denture made with Diamond D Ultra Impact Heat Cure Denture Acrylic for the strength and longevity of the Diamond d acrylic and then have the Diamond D Denture Relined with the Versacryl Thermo-Elastic Denture material.
Both Versacryl Thermo-Elastic Denture Material and Diamond D Ultra Impact Denture Acrylic are Proudly Manufactured by Keystone Industries in their cGMP, ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 13485:2003 compliant facility located in Cherry Hill, New Jersey USA.
