Michelle--I can't help you answer any of your questions but I can certainly relate to being scared and full of questions! I feel so fortunate to have found this website by accident when searching for some encouraging news about getting dentures. My "e day" is this coming Tuesday, July 14. I have spend alot of evenings reading other's stories and hopefully have myself better prepared for what to expect. I have 9 upper teeth to be pulled and will just have the needle thing done in the dental office. I plan to take my MP3 player and crank it up loud--for some reason I think that will drown out that dreaded crackling sound as teeth are being removed:) I have lost the other top teeth over the years -- one at a time -- due to infection. Is your date scheduled yet? If you'd like to write me back or add me as a friend I would love to chat further with you and we can compare notes. Best wishes, Christy

Hi Michelle,
I don't think that anyone will be able to predict how many injections your dentist will give you, but they do try to "numb" everything up and some of the injections will go into areas that are already numb so hopefully it wont be as bad as you think. Many of us on here have undergone this fully aware with only the novocaine. I am only into my second month and still new to all of this myself, I had placed a "blog" under "Helpful Info" in the "forum" section called "What you need to know" I tried to provide information from at least one persons perspective of "what to anticipate" I just remembered that some individuals have an issue with "gagging" as I have not at any point, I failed to mention that. You have found the best place in the world for gaining information into your new journey, as I have suggested to others take time to read the posts on here. "Time and "Patience" are two important words in this process. If you have specific questions please don't hesitate to post them. We will try to help you out as much as we can.

I applaude anyone that does this while awake! I had 26 extractions, including wisdom teeth, all at once. I had the option of awake or asleep...well, I guess you can guess what I chose!

I have been on and off here for a little over three years since I got this done and I know many people that did this awake and "most" of them have told me that it was nowhere near as bad as they thought it would be.

One suggestion that I wish I had received prior to getting it done? Belive it or not, try and sleep propped up the first night or two and cover your pillow with an old towel. You will probably drool more the first night than you have your entire life put together! (but, hey, I got new pillows out of it! LOL)

I had 15 extractions 5 days ago and only had novacaine injections. It really went pretty well and didn't take as long as I thought it would. They also did bone grafting and placed 2 mini implants in my lower jaw. I'm not sure how many injections I got but my entire mouth was numb. Very strange feeling. When the dentist was working and I felt any discomfort he would give me another shot. The first 3 days were definately the worst. I did have some swelling and bruising but everything is looking better.
It really didn't affect my speech as I already had an upper and a lower partial to get used to before my dentures. Eating isn't too bad. Still trying to stick with soft foods though. I am VERY happy that my E day is past and things are improving every day.

I am not a good barometer for the amt of novacaine...lol I took like 2X the normal amount.
Apparently I was one of his hardest to do. I think I should have had sedation.
The 1st few days are the worst, get some tea bags and wet them, keep between your teeth the tannic acid helps the bleeding. Sleep upright is a good idea., keep lots of towels and wash rags near.
My swelling was worst at about 4th day, then went down.
The days leading up to E Day are the worst...once it is over and with only 11 to pull it will be real quick.
I had 27 pulled at one time...it went faster than I thought it would.
Hang in there...we are here for you.

Hi Michele,
I had 14 teeth pulled at one time...i was only given novicane and some sweet air. I was awake for the whole thing.
I think he gave me two or three needles on each side-I had the uppers out. The denture was very wierd at first-It has been 5 months now, and I am getting used to it all-its not easy in the beginning, but you will be fine.

I am actually thinking no way Jose. I only have 7 teeth left on top and I chose nappy time. I break out in hives, leave the chair soaked but have gotten better over the years. I finally found a dentist who understood I was petrified. She does want to save everything but I just can not deal with it anymore. I am choosing to sleep because unless the OS has restraints I may decide to get up and run. I saw my new teeth the other day. I am excited but its the unknown that stinks. I actually have a bad abscess right now so I am choosing to sleep through it.

You guys are brave. I can not afford it right now but its my incentive to get it done.

Christy, did the MP3 player help while you were getting your teeth removed? My E-Day is Sep 21 and the thought of the cracking and poping is scaring the heck out of me.
