Can you wear a top denture without it or do you need it to keep it in??

Hi Summer,

I've only had my top denture for a week now.
I have not used any adhesive yet because my dentist wants me to wait until sockets are healed.

From what he has told me and what others here have shared using the adhesive is up to each person.
Depends how it fits on it's own and what you will be doing.

If you will be doing lots of talking, public speaking or eating something you think might loosen your denture then use some adhesive. Guess the only way to know is by waiting to see what happens as you eat and talk with your new denture in.

Mine is fitting pretty good right now, I get a soft reline on Monday.
I ate eggs last night, that and noodles is pretty much the most solid thing I have attempted yet.

Once the dentist gives me the okay to use adhesives I plan to use a little just for that extra feeling of hold.

Good Luck!

David

My dentist plans on 2-3 soft relines during this first 4 weeks or so then it may be good until I get the hard reline after 4-6 months. The soft relines with an immediate denture make it fit tighter and feels better/cushioned kind of against the sore & healing gums. The soft relines are quick, in and out in 30-45 minutes. If you get sore spots let your dentist know right away, they can trim them down and help with that.

An upper denture should hold without adhesive, the suction formed on the upper palate keeps it in place. I've had 2 different uppers in 12 years and never used any. But there are others who use some. It's pretty much up to the individual.

Hi Summer, I have had my upper for 8 months now. Sometimes I use adhesive and the one I think works best is Fiodent Powder. The powder is A LOT eaiser to remove than the other kinds of adhesives. Regular fixodent you have to kind pf pick off your gums to remove it but the powder you can rinse out with warm water and maybe use a tooth brush. It also feels better to me.

If I want to eat I put in Fixodent powder. I have tried them all...it is the lleast messy and the easiest to remove.

Mine have had many, manyy soft relines. They only provide good suction for about a week.
I have to be careful the dont pop off when I talk without adhesive.

I agree with Goth. For the uppers, you shouldn't need adhesives because the suction should keep a well-fitted upper tight, almost like it's welded in place. For lowers, it really varies person to person and the suction is minimal at best. That said, I ONLY use adhesive if I'm going to be eating corn-on-the-cob and want to show off at a picnic. :)

I will occasionally use Fixodent powder since my perm uppers are starting to slip. I will definitely need a hard reline before long. I got my perms after 5 month but my immediate was not working by then. I know I should have waited but you do what you have to do.

I have only had my dentures for a couple of weeks now. I have used fixodent a couple of times on the top. I use it more on the lowers and I agree about the fixodent powder, it is way easier to clean off and holds really well.

My mom has had uppers for a long time and she hardly ever uses any type of adhesive. She eat everything she wants without it.

I have had "THE TEETH" for a month now. I have had one soft reline and for a week after that it was paradise- they actually felt like part of me- so I have faith that eventually they will like that all the time.

I used "glue" (polident) for a week but found it made me gag. I think it is because it doesn't move against the roof of my mouth.

Mine are feeling loose-ish again now so I tried glue again on Tuesday- back to gaggy. No more glue for me.

I'm just waiting for my gums to settle and tightly holding my hand over my mouth when coughing, sneezing, yawning etc. That 'just relined 'feel is inspiring me for the future!
