Dentures A New Smile

Hi Everyone,

I guess I am in the process of checking out everything on the market, and now I am going to try Sea-Bond Denture Adhesive wafers.  I tried using Cushion Grip, which is highly recommended, but I am not completely sold on it as yet.  I keep trying to make it work, and no matter how hard I try I am not happy with it.  It does hold the denture longer, but it doesn't hold any better than what I was using before.   It came off whenever I removed the denture, so I don't see where it stays for 4 days at a time.  Anyway, I am wondering if anyone has used Sea-Bond on lower dentures, and what you think of it.  Also, can you use Polygrip along with it, if your denture still doesn't feel all that secure?   I was using Polygrip before, and am searching for something that will hold ALL day.  Nothing seems to do that, or if I looking for something that doesn't exist?

I use both on the bottom .The cushion grip should stay in place . Then poly on top of it. Does food get underneath with the poly  alone? My problem is I tend to put my tongue under then  the poly is sticky in my mouth  do you have this problem ?
Before I could use my implants.....I used Fixodent food seal on my bottom denture. I really liked it.

I have used seabond pads and they work okay for awhile but I do not think you could use Polygrip over it because they actually become soft and cushy. They do come out nice and easy.

Barbara I just do not know what you are doing or not doing that the Cushion Grip comes out. I have kept mine in as long as 2 weeks and I have to soak my plates in very hot water for 15 minutes to get it out, sometimes I have to go back into the hot water a second time to get it out. Mine bonds to the plates and stays. Either your plates are not really dry before you put it in, or you do not wait long enough after you first put it in to let it set real well or possibly you are putting some form of adhesive on too soon and it is breaking it down. I do not put any powder which is what I use on top of the Cushion Grip for at least 4 hours or more. I just think it tends to make the Cushion Grip sticky if it has not hardened completley. I have taken mine out after at least an hour or so and put them in ice water for a few minutes  if I was in a hurry and that does help harden the Cushion grip but if you try to take them out too soon it can come loose from the plate. It actually needs to "cure" I guess is the word and adhere to  plates and it does take a little while.

I have found it works best if you put the tube in really hot water before you use it just for 2-3 minutes and it makes it very soft and pliable. then roll it out into a thin little snake,( Ido this between my fingers, I do not roll it out on anything because it could pick up some little particals that may make it not stick also) lay it in the part where the teeth would have been and then push it gently but firmly onto the plate until it makes a smooth thin layer. (for the tops, do not cover palate part, just where the teeth go and if needed a TINY strip across the back about 1/4 inch from the edge) Let it stand right at 5 minutes and then put it in with your other plate already in place and bite down gently just as you would bite down any other time, this way the teeth line up with your bite. Bite down firmly but gently for just a few seconds then just keep minimal pressure on it for about an hour. You do not have to keep biting down but I try to keep my teeth together so it will set up good. I am so sorry you are not having good luck but maybe if you keep trying, and use as little as you can get away with so it will not ooze out. If it does, just trim it but you want as thin a layer as you can possibly get away with so it will not make your teeth feel like they are to big.

Hi everyone,

Well, here I am experimenting once again.  Today, I used Sea-Bond, and then I used Polygrip right on top of it.  Well, right or wrong, it is still secure in my mouth!  This is the best so far, and of course, I will be curious to see if it last right thru until tomorrow.....Had breakfast out this morning, and usually I am running to the bathroom to "reglue", but not today!

Thanks to all for your imput!!

Hi Trixie,

Do you use Sea-Bond and Polygrip?  Or are you using Cushion Grip and Poly-grip?  In answer to your question, yes, the food did get under it and it drove me nuts.  I too, ended up putting my tongue under it, the end result being that I would loosen the denture.  Today I used Sea-Bond, AND Polygrip.  I trust Polygrip the most, but Sea-Bond made it feel just a little big snugger.  When I used Cushion-Grip, pieces of it were hardening during the day, and I started picking at it, because it felt weird.  I am beginning to think it is all just my imagination at this point!!  All I know is, it is STILL holding, and this is the longest period of time for me.....

Hi April,

I guess what we have here is the fact that I don't have the patience to wait for it to set....That must be the problem, because knowing the denture is very loose, after I put on the Cushion Grip, I can't wait for hours for it to cure, as I can't talk, or eat in the meantime.  You have been so nice with all your information, and I really appreciate it, but that must be what the problem is.  I need a quick-fix, so it doesn't work for me.

I dont care much for cushion grip either,I tried it a few different ways without any luck.I think its just like anything else everyone is different & reacts to things differntly :) I love fixodent food seal,Fixodent comfort & fixodent extra strength powder.I switch back & forth between the 3.Ive NEVER had anything hold as good as the powder :)
I agree with you Sara, and those are the two that I use as well.  I tell ya with that powder, if I am not careful I get them too unmoveable. ha.

Hi Lynn,

I have never tried the powder although I am a great fan of Fixodent  myself.  Is is easy to use, and does it really make that much of a difference?  Does it adhere immediately, or do you have to wait for it to set?  I have NO patience, and that is why Cushion Grip didn't work for me.   Does it hold thru the whole day?  It seems I might make it thru lunch, but by the time dinner rolls around, I have to go reapply sometimes in the middle of eating!   Wow, does this ever get easier, of is the way it will always be??

Fixodent powder is almost immediate and it is very strong. You have to wet your plate, lightly dust it with the powder, I find lightly squeezing the bottle and moving it at the same time makes a light dusting. You need to shake the excess off and be prepared for it to last all day. I think maybe I have such good results with Cushion Grip because I have SO much space between my plates that just using regular adhesives do not work, There is not enough contact to the gums. I am getting my one and only "Free"(was only one included in my package deal) reline in 4 more weeks, then maybe I won't need it anymore either...my prayers to God's ears!!!

Cushion Grip burned the heck out of my gums.

Sea bond never seemed to work too well and seemed goopy and messy when it...I don't know...dissolved or whatever.  Activated???  Whatever it's called when the paper-y thing becomes goopy-supposed-to-adhere-mess.

Never tried Sea Bond with anything else.   Not sure how that would go.

Good luck!   I'm hoping that when I get my perms I won't care too much.  I don't care too much now, but that's mostly because I'm not dating so kissing is not an issue.  When I'm in the dating game, the loose teeth are a prob and I have to use adhesive.  And since they are SO loose, any adhesives just make me hurt because they sort of "pull" at my flesh since the teeth don't have a nice fit over my natural contours to begin with.

I'm fortunate in that they are loose enough that I want adhesive if I want to kiss or anything, but not so loose that I can't, for the most part, muddle through an average day with no adhesive.  I DO have to take them out to rinse them after I eat ANYTHING because it gets up under the plates, and sometimes they slide, but so far, not so badly that anyone would be sure to notice because at my age, 35, no one would suspect that I had dentures anyway, and for the most part, I'm just careful about what I eat and how I chew it to make due with the teeth I have.

I need to try the Powder I have only used the Fixodent food seal but I am a coffee drinker and sometimes they come off after having a hot cup! :(
